Mediasilo creates a proxy file for every file uploaded in order to ensure optimal playback across all browsers. For all proxy files, the bitrate will not exceed 4 MB/s or a frame size of 720p for the highest quality playback experience.
Best Practices for uploading files:
Encoding files close to these specs will ensure quicker processing once the file has uploaded to the system. Here are the encoding settings for proxies that are created:
Codec | Aspect Ratio | Data Rate | Audio Settings |
H.264 | 540p (960x540) | 1750-2000kbps |
Codec: AAC Sample Rate: 48000Hz Require: 1 audio channel and no more than 8 Audio will be mixed down to a max of 2 channels |
H.264 | 720p (1280x720) | 2000-4000kbps |
Codec: AAC Sample Rate: 48000Hz Require: 1 audio channel and no more than 8 Audio will be mixed down to a max of 2 channels |
File Specifications:
Because a proxy is created for every file, MediaSilo does not have specific upload file specifications. Instead, we support a wide range of file types and codecs, and have just a few guidelines for making sure your file will preview correctly within MediaSilo:
File Names and Extensions:
- File names must have a supported extension. Click here for a list of supported extensions.
- File names can contain only supported characters--which are letters, numbers, single spaces, dashes and underscores. The browser uploader will automatically check for a valid extension and filename before upload; unfortunately, FTP clients are unable to do so and must rely on users' diligence.
- Content must be uploaded as individual files. Folders cannot be uploaded, unless archived as a .zip file.
Video:
- Anamorphic videos will not be un-squeezed, and will need to be converted to 1:1 square pixels PAR before upload.
- Videos must meet our supported containers and codecs
Audio:
- Video and audio files must have at least 1 audio channel within 1 audio stream. Any audio channels beyond two will be mixed down.
- Having zero audio channels or more than 8 channels within a single audio stream will not generate a preview.
- Mono audio streams are supported, but multiple mono audio streams will not be mixed down properly. Mono channels will need to be exported in stereo pairs in a single audio stream, for all your audio to play back in the proxies that MediaSilo generates.
Playback:
Loading times and playback will depend on the File Size and the local Network's bandwidth. If a file is not playing back, be sure to test the following:
1) The file still does not play back after being hard-wired in to a strong ethernet connection
2) The file still does not play back after clearing your browser's cache or entering a Private/Incognito window
3) An extension or plugin on your browser is not preventing the video player from loading properly
4) The file does not play back across multiple, up-to-date browsers
If you still cannot play a file back after testing these, the source video file most likely did not generate a Proxy file for streaming. See our troubleshooting article here.
